Pennsylvania Faces Economic Blow as Bankrupt Pharmacy Chain Widens Closure Impact to Sixty-One Locations

Rite Aid is closing additional stores, and no other state is suffering as much as its home state of Pennsylvania. Since the struggling firm declared bankruptcy in October, nearly 270 stores have been earmarked for closure.

Its initial bankruptcy petition stated that 154 outlets around the country, including 39 in its native state of Pennsylvania, would be closing soon. However, they have now filed numerous further updates, bringing the total number of closures to 270, with a whopping 61 in Pennsylvania. Another five Pennsylvania stores were scheduled to close this week.

Rite Aid said in a statement that more store closings may happen:

“In connection with the court-supervised process, the company will continue assessing its footprint and close additional underperforming stores. These efforts will further reduce the Company’s rent expense and are expected to strengthen its overall financial performance.”
