Sunshine, theme parks, citrus foods, and alligators are just a few of the things that people know Florida for. But there are also thousands of crimes that haven’t been solved there that have hurt families and towns.

As of 2020, Project: Cold Case, a non-profit that wants to bring attention to and provide resources for cold case investigations, says that Florida has a clearance rate of only 66% for murders and manslaughters. This means that almost 20,000 cases are still open and closed, with no arrests, convictions, or peace of mind for the victims and their families.

What does “cold case” mean

There is no proof, leads, or suspects in a cold case, so the investigation into it has been put on hold or closed. A cold case can be opened again at any time, though, if new material or technology comes in.

For instance, progress in DNA testing, fingerprint analysis, or forensic science can help find or rule out possible criminals. If witnesses or sources come forward with new information that can help solve the case, it can be used as proof. Sometimes, a new prosecution or civil action may be possible after the law or the time limit for filing a case has changed.

Why Is It That Some Problems Are Harder To Solve Than Others?

Cases can be solved or not depending on a lot of things, like the type of crime, where it happened, when it happened, the proof, the witnesses, and how willing the suspects are to cooperate. Some crimes are harder to solve because they happen at random, for no reason, or by people you don’t know.

Others may have more than one victim, more than one offender, or more than one state. Sometimes there may not be much or any physical proof, or the evidence may be tainted, lost, or destroyed. Some bystanders might not be honest, won’t help, or are afraid of getting hurt. Some suspects might have legal defenses, alibis, or fake names.

In Florida, Which City Has The Most Unresolved Crimes?

Project: Cold Case says that as of October 2021, 1,433 cases had not been solved in Miami, making it the city in Florida with the most unanswered cases. With over 2.7 million people, Miami is the biggest and most popular city in Florida. Its people are diverse and always on the move. It is also a popular tourist spot that reaches millions of people each year. But it also has a past of crime, violence, and corruption. During the 1980s and 1990s, the city was hit hard by drug crimes, gang wars, and riots. Some of Miami’s most well-known unexplained crimes are:

The killing of Adam Walsh, John Walsh’s 6-year-old son and host of America’s Most Wanted. Adam was taken from a Sears store in Hollywood, Florida, on July 27, 1981. His severed head was found in a ditch near Vero Beach two weeks later. The case made people all over the country very angry, and it led to the creation of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. In 2008, police said they had found the killer to be Ottis Toole, a serial killer who had died in jail in 1996. However, no charges were ever brought because there wasn’t enough proof.

It was the death of famous Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace. The killer Andrew Cunanan shot and killed Versace outside of his home on Ocean Drive in Miami Beach on July 15, 1997. Cunanan had already killed four other men in different states. Eight days later, Cunanan’s body was found on a houseboat in Miami Beach. It looked like he had killed himself. Cunanan didn’t leave a note or statement, so no one knows why he killed the man.

The killing of the famous rapper and actor Tupac Shakur. Four shots were fired at Shakur from a car in Las Vegas on September 7, 1996, after he had seen Mike Tyson and Bruce Seldon fight. After six days, he died in the hospital. The person who fired the shots and the driver of the car that did it were never caught or charged. A lot of ideas and guesses have been made about the case, including rivalries, plots, and cover-ups.

How Can More Cold Cases Be Solved

It’s not easy to solve cold cases because it takes time, money, people, and knowledge. But there are things that can be done to help the victims and their families get justice and move on with their lives, such as

Law enforcement departments could set up cold case units or work with other organizations like the FBI, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, or the U.S. Marshals Service to share resources and information.

2.) Making more people aware of the problem and getting them involved by making websites, databases, podcasts, documentaries, or reward programs to ask people for help, tips, or gifts. One project like this is Project: Cold Case, which gives families, friends, and supporters of cold case victims a place to talk about their experiences and ask for help.

3. Using new tools and technologies, like DNA testing, fingerprint analysis, face recognition, or genealogy, to look at or re-look at old or new evidence and to find or identify possible suspects, witnesses, or family members.

4. Going over old cases again and again by looking at the original files, reports, statements, and proof, as well as by doing new searches, interviews, or surveillance to find new clues, connections, or angles.

There is hope, though, that some of these cases can be solved with the help of fresh ideas, new tools, and more work.
