One apprehended after attempting to rob an ATM on New Year’s Eve

A Texas man is being held in the Geneva County Jail after police say he and another unnamed guy attempted to rob an ATM on New Year’s Day using a stolen church van.

Slocomb Police responded to an ATM alarm report at the First National Bank of Hartford in Slocomb on Monday, January 1.

When Slocomb Police arrived on the scene, they discovered a white church van backed up to the ATM with hooks attached to the vehicle and wrapped around the ATM, as well as an unknown guy attempting to break into the ATM.

The unnamed person and another suspect, subsequently identified as Stanley Cordell Varner II of Houston, Texas, fled the scene, according to police, but Varner was apprehended at a neighboring business.

Varner is charged with Theft of Property in the First Degree, Possession of Burglary Tools, First Degree Criminal Mischief, Attempting to Elude, Resisting Arrest, and Second Degree Marijuana Possession. He is now on bond in Texas on an unrelated theft case.

According to Slocomb Police, Varner will also face charges in Hartford for Theft in the First Degree and Breaking and Entering of a Motor Vehicle for stealing the vehicle from Faith Full Gospel Church.

The second male suspect’s identity and whereabouts are unclear at this time, although he was last seen going towards Kelly Street in Slocomb.
