A report on cancer data that came out in January said that colorectal cancer is the main reason men younger than 50 die from cancer. It’s also the second most deadly cancer for women the same age, only after breast cancer.

That’s different from the late 1990s, when colon cancer was the fourth most common type of cancer in women and men under 50.

In a statement, Dr. Ahmedin Jemal, senior vice president of surveillance and health equity research for the American Cancer Society, said, “The steady sharp rise in colorectal cancer in younger Americans is alarming.” Colorectal cancer is the third most common type of cancer in both men and women.

The study also said that more than 152,000 new cases of colorectal cancer will be found in men and women in the United States in 2024. It’s also possible that more than 53,000 people will die that year. In 2024, there will be more than two million new cases of cancer, which is a first.

For 2023, it was predicted that 24,100 Canadians will be identified with colorectal cancer and 9,300 will die from it. This is 11% of all cancer deaths in Canada that year.
