On Wednesday, BrightFarms announced a recall of certain baby spinach and salad kits due to potential Listeria contamination, affecting products distributed in seven states.

The recall involves specific four-ounce BrightFarms Baby Spinach containers with particular January by-dates and UPC codes.

Additionally, various BrightFarms salad kits, including Mediterranean, Chickpea Caesar, Bacon Ranch “Crunch,” and Southwest kits, with differing UPC codes, are implicated, as reported by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The recall initiation was prompted by positive Listeria monocytogenes test results in spinach during routine sampling conducted by supplier Element Farms.

The FDA noted that the baby spinach subject to recall originated from Element Farms. Simultaneously, there is a possibility of cross-contamination in the recalled salad kits occurring at a BrightFarms facility in Pennsylvania.

Consuming food contaminated with listeria bacteria can result in listeriosis, an infection primarily affecting pregnant women and their newborns, individuals aged 65 or older, and those with compromised immune systems, as outlined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Common symptoms include fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.

BrightFarms is issuing a recall for four salad kits produced at its Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, facility, citing the potential for cross-contamination.
