A man suspected of driving into a crowd during an Independence Day celebration, killing three people and wounding eight, has been apprehended and charged with driving under the influence, New York City police said Friday.
Daniel Hyden, 44, of Monmouth Junction, New Jersey, has been charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, eight counts of assault, one crime of driving without a license in the second degree, and one count of driving while drunk, according to the NYPD.
According to the New York Police Department, additional charges are possible.
A truck crashed into a park on Manhattan’s Lower East Side late Thursday, killing at least three people, according to authorities.
At after 9 p.m., a gray Ford F-150 struck a party celebrating the holiday after driving past an intersection and into Corlears Hook Park. Hyden was driving at “a high rate of speed when he failed to navigate the road and struck 11 pedestrians” inside the park, according to police.
On Friday, the NYPD identified Ana Morel, 43, as the third person deceased, following the identification of Lucille Pinkney, 59, and Hernan Pinkney, 38. Police said it’s unclear whether the two victims, who have the same surname, are related.
Police said seven of the victims, aged 11 to 35, were taken to hospitals in stable condition. CNN reported that a 30-year-old woman was brought to the hospital in critical condition.
