On Tuesday, one suspect was fatally shot in connection with a bus hijacking that sparked a police chase across two Georgia counties.
The incident began around 4:35 p.m. ET in downtown Atlanta, when officers reacted to reports of gunfire on a Gwinnett County Transit bus and a “possible hostage situation,” according to the Atlanta Officers Department.
“When the officers arrived on the scene, the bus fled, and a chase ensued,” the Atlanta Police Department stated in a press release.

The bus was hijacked while several passengers were on board, according to authorities.
The following pursuit covered many counties, and police used “various tactics” to stop the bus, according to police. Police said the vehicle eventually came to a stop in Stone Mountain, DeKalb County, about 16 miles northeast of where the incident began.
When the bus came to a halt, DeKalb County SWAT personnel “strategically positioned the Bearcat to prevent any avenues of escape,” the DeKalb County Police Department said in a statement.
The suspect, a 39-year-old guy, was arrested without incident, according to police.

SWAT officers discovered the shooting victim while clearing the bus, DeKalb County police said. According to Atlanta police, the victim was taken to a local hospital in severe condition and died there. Police did not disclose any other information about the victim.
