For medical reasons, marijuana is now allowed in most of the United States, but it is still illegal in South Carolina. But over the past few years, there have been real attempts to make medical marijuana legal in the Palmetto State, though with some limits.
The First Law In South Carolina To Legalize Marijuana With Low Thc Levels Was:
Julian’s Law, which was passed in 2014, was the last law in South Carolina to allow certain types of marijuana. The law allowed people with certain epileptic symptoms that were impossible to control to get low-THC/high-CBD goods that had at least 15% CBD and no more than 0.9% THC. It was also made possible by Julian’s Law for people in South Carolina who have epilepsy to take part in FDA-approved clinical studies that use CBD.
Recent Attempts to Make Medical Marijuana Legal:
Since 2022, the first attempts to set up a medical cannabis program have failed. The Senate passed the South Carolina Compassionate Care Act, but the House floor voted against it in the end. In the same way, S. 335 and S. 268—two bills that would have legalized marijuana—failed to gain support in 2022. In S 335 it was suggested that people aged 21 and up should be able to get small amounts of marijuana and grow it at home. Additionally, S. 268 wanted to include a voluntary vote in the November 2022 election so that people could decide if marijuana use for leisure purposes should be legalized.
The South Carolina House of Representatives presented two medical cannabis bills in January 2023. These bills, H 3226 and H 3486 (Compassionate Care Act), were both sent to the Medical, Military, Public, and Municipal Affairs Committee.
Another bill, H 3561, which was introduced on the same day and sent to the Judiciary Committee, would make it legal to have less than 28 grams (one ounce) of marijuana or less than 10 grams of hashish. This would allow police to issue tickets. The bill is being looked at by the Judiciary subcommittee right now.
The Chance That Marijuana Will Be Legal In South Carolina In 2024 Is:
South Carolina still has laws against marijuana, but efforts to change these laws have stepped up a lot in the last few years, and there are now several bills moving through the local government. Most of the United States has already approved medical marijuana, so it looks like South Carolina will do the same soon. 2024 is one possible year.
