A 53-year-old Sturgis man and a 48-year-old Three Rivers woman were detained Saturday, Dec. 30, after sheriff’s deputies engaged them in a high-speed car chase that crossed the Michigan-Indiana border.
The pursuit began at 11 a.m., when deputies from the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office attempted to pull over a car for a speeding violation on Fawn River Road near Balk in Sturgis, about 1 mile north of the state’s border with Indiana, according to officials.
The driver of the vehicle, a Sturgis man, then sped away, sparking a car chase that saw vehicles reach speeds of more than 100 miles per hour, said to St. Joseph County Undersheriff Jason Bingaman in a statement.

The pursuit continued into Indiana, where LaGrange police and LaGrange County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called in before the vehicle pulled over and surrendered, according to Bingaman.
LaGrange, Indiana is roughly 10 miles south of Sturgis and 50 miles south of Kalamazoo.
Both the Sturgis man and the Three Rivers lady were arrested this weekend in the LaGrange County Jail on drug-related charges, and officials expected to pursue charges in Michigan for fleeing and eluding, according to Bingaman.
