Filing your taxes can be quite a hassle, particularly when it comes to collecting all the required paperwork. Rest assured, I have all the information you need to smoothly navigate through this year’s tax deadlines.

Just a heads up, the 2024 tax season began on Jan. 29, so if you’re ready, you can start submitting your tax returns. It’s important to note that employers are required to send out W-2 and 1099 forms by the end of January.

If you haven’t received yours yet, it’s a good idea to check your mailbox or reach out to your company’s HR or payroll department. Now, let’s address the important matter at hand: the deadline for submitting your 2023 tax return to the IRS. The deadline for most taxpayers falls on Monday, April 15, 2024.

However, residents of Maine or Massachusetts have until Wednesday, April 17, 2024 to file their taxes due to holidays such as Patriot’s Day and Emancipation Day. Furthermore, individuals who find themselves in a federally declared disaster area or serving abroad in the military may be granted additional time to file.

And what if you require additional time? April 15 is also the deadline for filing a tax extension with the IRS. You have until October to organize all your paperwork, but it’s important to note that you must still pay any estimated amount you owe by April 15 to avoid penalties.

Regarding state taxes, the majority of states adhere to the federal filing deadline of April 15, although there are a few exceptions. Depending on your location, the deadline may vary. For residents of Delaware, Iowa, Louisiana, or Virginia, the deadline could be different.

Remember, it’s important to make any outstanding payments by the original deadline, even if you receive an extension for filing your state taxes. Now, let’s discuss that delightful refund. When you file electronically and choose direct deposit, the IRS assures that you will receive your refund within 21 days, provided that your return is in order.

Nevertheless, for individuals who have claimed the earned income tax credit or additional child tax credit, the IRS will not begin distributing refunds until at least mid-February, and it is anticipated that payments will be received by Feb. 27, 2024.
