Grieving Families Criticize Court for Delaying Trial Date and Facing Continuous Setbacks in Idaho Quadruple Murder Case

MOSCOW, IDAHO - OCTOBER 26: Bryan Koberger listens during a hearing to overturn his grand jury indictment on October 26, 2023 in Moscow, Idaho. Kohberger, a former criminology PhD student, was indicted earlier this year in the November 2022 killings of Madison Mogen, 21; Kaylee Goncalves, 21; Xana Kernodle, 20; and Ethan Chapin, 20, in an off-campus apartment near the University of Idaho.

The families of the slain University of Idaho students criticized officials for another delay to the trial of suspected quadruple murderer Bryan Kohberger.

Following a judge’s decision not to set a trial date this week, the families of victims Kaylee Goncalves and Xana Kernodle expressed frustration, urging the courts to take action and stop delaying the process.

Why do people struggle to understand the families of victims? The families expressed their desire for ‘justice’, but the ongoing delays are making it difficult for them.

Their requests for assistance are being seen as deliberate delays by Kohberger’s trial team, according to former FBI special agent Jennifer Coffindaffer speaking to DailyMail.com. It seems like an attempt to give the suspected killer an advantage.

Kohberger, 29, allegedly caused a national uproar in November 2022 following the tragic deaths of University of Idaho students Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen, and Kaylee Goncalves in their off-campus residence.

Approaching two years since the gruesome murders, the trial is still in its early stages. This week’s delay occurred as Kohberger’s defense attorney Anne Taylor argued for a postponement due to the extensive amount of information involved.

There have been instances of not confirming Kohberger’s alibi for the night of the murders, with his only statement being that he was driving alone.

After the most recent postponement, Kohberger’s trial won’t happen until at least spring 2025. In a statement, the families of Goncalves and Kernodle expressed their desire for justice for their loved ones.

“Everyone can claim to understand our feelings and sympathize with us, but they never truly grasp what we want, which is quite simple,” the statement conveyed.

We are seeking effective communication, efficient prosecution, timely court decisions, and a fair trial.

This is not the first instance where families have expressed their frustration with the ongoing delays. In November, Kaylee Goncalves’ mother described the situation as “gut-wrenching” due to the slow progress. Why does this have to be so prolonged?

The statement emphasized the urgency of making decisions and taking action to address the tragedy and move forward towards healing and justice.

MOSCOW, IDAHO – SEPTEMBER 13: Bryan Kohberger, accused of murder, arrives for a hearing on cameras in the courtroom in Latah County District Court on September 13, 2023 in Moscow, Idaho.

Coffindaffer expressed similar views, urging officials to resolve the ongoing disputes for the benefit of the families involved.

She expressed her concern to DailyMail.com following the most recent hearing, emphasizing the impact of the delays on the families of the victims.

The individual, who has extensive experience as an expert witness in various trials, expressed frustration over the delayed trial.

They emphasized the emotional toll on the victim’s families, likening the ongoing hearings to repeatedly reopening a wound.

“They need to meet with him, they need to hear the specifics, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for the families of the victims,” she remarked.

The ex-FBI special agent alleged that Kohberger’s defense team is intentionally employing ‘delay tactics’ to gain an advantage, such as the risk of key witnesses passing away if the case drags on for years.

“There are numerous potential consequences of delaying, and in my view, the defense is aware of this and will likely persist in delaying,” she added.

Some individuals were upset by the lengthy process without a trial date and the demolition of the Moscow, Idaho home where the murders occurred in December.

While the prosecution and defense were in agreement about tearing it down, the families opposed the decision. Coffindaffer believed it should have stayed up until a conviction was reached.
