ChatGPT has introduced a new feature that empowers users to have control over the information it retains and discards from one conversation to another.
According to OpenAI’s explanation in a FAQ about the pilot memory feature, ChatGPT now has the ability to retain what it learns between conversations. This enables it to offer more pertinent responses.
While interacting with ChatGPT, it will gradually improve its assistance by retaining information and preferences discussed during your conversations. With regular usage of ChatGPT, you’ll gradually witness the enhancements in its memory and experience the improvements firsthand.
The feature, now being introduced to a select group of ChatGPT users (both free and Plus), aims to expedite the process of obtaining desired results in the preferred format. For example, it will store a marketer’s preferred voice, tone, and target audience, or a developer’s preferred programming language and framework.
“It can learn your style and preferences, and build upon past interactions,” stated OpenAI in a recent blog post. “This efficient approach results in time savings and facilitates the generation of responses that are both pertinent and enlightening.”
Chatgpt’s New Feature
ChatGPT allows users to instruct it to retain certain information and, conversely, to discard specific details. “You have the option to instruct it to retain information, inquire about its stored memories, and casually or through settings, request it to erase them,” stated OpenAI.
The feature will be enabled as the default setting in ChatGPT. Users have the option to disable it in their privacy settings. Additionally, users have the option to access their memories, delete specific ones, or clear all memories through the settings.
OpenAI is also testing a feature called “temporary chat” for users who prefer not to have the memory feature for entire conversations. This feature is similar to “incognito browsing.”
According to a FAQ, users can engage in a conversation within ChatGPT using temporary chat, starting “with a blank slate.” Chats that are temporary are not saved in a user’s history. They also lack the ability to recall past discussions.
There is an important point to consider: OpenAI has the possibility of retaining temporary chats for a maximum of 30 days. According to the blog, OpenAI may utilize data from the memory feature to train its models. However, it is important to note that the Teams and Enterprise editions are exempt from this.
OpenAI has announced that they will be sharing plans for the broader availability of the memory feature in the near future.
