Prosecutors say two Chicago men robbed a construction team, exchanged gunfire with an off-duty sheriff’s officer on the scene, escaped, then returned to fire another shot, only to have one of the victims draw a gun and open fire on them as well. There were no injuries recorded.
According to court records, one of the males was identified as a suspect in a string of robberies last fall but was merely charged with a misdemeanor. He’s also on “first-time weapon offender probation” for a 2022 firearms charge.
The incident took place on March 1 in the 11500 block of South State. According to a Chicago police report, two gunmen exited a stolen Kia and held up four construction workers at gunpoint, stealing phones and wallets.
An off-duty sheriff’s officer working security intervened in the robbery and fired rounds at both criminals, according to the report. The culprits then fled the site.
Prosecutors say they returned shortly later and fired at least one shot into the air. That prompted one of the victims, a concealed carry holder, to draw his gun and shoot at them as they fled.
According to the CPD report, officers apprehended Williams and Alexander as they attempted to leave the scene in an Uber.
Both males face charges of attempted murder, four counts of armed robbery with a firearm, one case of attempted armed robbery with a firearm, and aggravated assault by firearm discharge. Judge Maryam Ahmad held them because they posed a threat to public safety.
Williams has been on first-time weapon offender probation in a firearms case since September 2022, according to court documents. If he completes the probation program, the gun charge will be removed from his record.
Williams was arrested in another case last September, nearly a year after being sentenced to probation. According to a CPD report, officers discovered Williams “pretending to be asleep” inside an apartment with a shattered door after receiving information that two robbery suspects had entered the building from an abandoned stolen vehicle.
The officers stated they discovered a revolver on a bookshelf, a big sum of money on a dresser, and another individual suspected of being involved in ten crimes. Williams also had a check made out to a Hispanic male who had been the target of an armed robbery the day before, according to the CPD report.
Prosecutors charged him simply with misdemeanor theft of lost or misplaced property. Judge Barbara Dawkins allowed him to stand trial the next day.
