According to court papers, a Missouri instructor is charged with sexually abusing a student after a witness handed police images of scratches on the alleged victim’s back that he claimed were caused by sex. The student’s father was also charged with child endangerment, with police alleging that he was aware of the alleged assault and permitted it to continue.
Hailey Clifton-Carmack, 26, was arrested in Texas on Friday and charged with first-degree endangering the welfare of a child, second-degree statutory rape, sexual contact with a student, and fourth-degree child molestation, according to a Facebook post from the Garden Ridge Police Department. She is currently awaiting extradition to Missouri.
Clifton-Carmack, a former Laquey High School teacher, was allegedly closely engaged with a 16-year-old boy, according to a probable cause statement acquired by PEOPLE.
According to the probable cause statement, on December 7, a student witness reported an inappropriate relationship between Clifton-Carmack and the accused victim to a school resource officer.
According to the statement, the witness told police they found out about the relationship after the alleged victim showed them pictures of scratches on his back, and they also claimed they overheard a phone conversation between Clifton-Carmack and the student in which she allegedly told the teen, “I’m out of state but I can send you money baby,” when told it was his birthday.
The school superintendent had previously “spoken to” Clifton-Carmack about being “too close with students,” according to the probable cause statement.
In the statement, the witness also claims that the accused victim believed he was the reason Clifton-Carmack’s divorce went through.
Police eventually acquired a search order for Clifton-Carmack’s phone and found messages between her and the student about their alleged relationship on December 22.
It is unclear whether Clifton-Carmack has filed a plea to any of the allegations against her.
According to a second probable cause statement acquired by PEOPLE, a second witness told detectives that both Clifton-Carmack and the youngster told the student’s father about the relationship. According to the witness, Clifton-Carmack and the accused victim deployed student lookouts while having intercourse at school.
According to the statement, the teen’s father, whom PEOPLE is not naming to preserve the victim’s confidentiality, allegedly told the second witness that he didn’t halt the relationship because he assumed they would continue to have it behind his back regardless.
According to jail records, the father was charged with first-degree endangering the welfare of a kid. It is unclear whether he has retained counsel or filed a plea.
