Indianapolis — A 17-year-old died after being injured in a wreck just minutes after Indianapolis police, who were investigating a group of armed adolescents, stopped chasing a car he was in.

Officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched Sunday to investigate a group of young boys flashing firearms in downtown. While on the way, officers were informed that the minors had hidden the pistols in a parked car.

Officers arrived in the area and began chasing the gang of youngsters on foot. One adolescent guy was apprehended and later released, but the others in the group were not located.

Analysts at IMPD’s Real Time Crime Center then observed a person known to be prohibited from carrying firearms approach the driver’s seat of the parked automobile with a gun on him. Terryoun Mays, 17, was one of two other teenage occupants in the car.

According to IMPD, once the automobile exited the downtown area, responding officers attempted a traffic stop. While the driver initially stopped and pulled over, police say he ignored subsequent requests and eventually drove away.

Officers pursued the car until they lost sight of it, at which point the chase was called off. IMPD reported Monday that the officers then drove over to the side of the road and came to a complete stop.
