USC Student Arrested for Fatal Stabbing of Suspected Car Break-in Perpetrator

A 19-year-old University of Southern California student was arrested Tuesday after police accused him of murdering a man suspected of breaking into automobiles near campus, authorities said.

According to a Los Angeles Police Department statement, paramedics and police went to a complaint of an assault with a deadly weapon near campus soon after 8 p.m. Monday and pronounced the person deceased on the site.

Police identified the suspect as Ivan Gallegos, 19, of Los Angeles. According to USC spokesman Lauren Bartlett, the adolescent is a student majoring in business administration.

The event occurred near the 700 block of West 28th Street, which is a few blocks north of the University Park campus and the hub of Greek Row.

“The male victim was breaking into vehicles at the location when the suspect confronted and stabbed the victim,” according to the LAPD.

According to a spokeswoman for the County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner, the victim’s identity is still being determined and will be disclosed once family members are told of his death.

Gallegos was put into jail at the LAPD’s 77th Street Division early Tuesday, according to inmate records. According to the records, Gallegos was being held on a $2 million bond after being accused of murder but not formally charged by authorities.

It was unclear on Tuesday afternoon if the student had retained lawyers. The local public defender’s office did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

According to police, Gallegos remained at the scene following the confrontation. According to jail records, he was arrested almost half an hour after officers arrived.
