Two MINORS CHARGED IN FATAL SHOOTOUT That Killed 13-year-old in East Austin

AUSTIN, Texas – Two persons have been charged in connection with a fatal shooting in East Austin.

On August 22, police were called to Thurgood Avenue after a person was discovered with a gunshot wound and confirmed deceased at the scene.

During the inquiry, authorities discovered that 13-year-old Jeremiah Cavazos was shot and killed in a shootout. According to police, Cavazos and another minor suspect drove a stolen vehicle to the area to meet with another underage suspect. Cavazos and the suspect he was with then attempted to rob the person they were meeting, resulting in a firefight.

After being shot, Cavazos and the person he was with returned to the vehicle, according to authorities. Cavazos was then thrown from the back seat onto the pavement. Meanwhile, the second juvenile suspect fled the scene on foot.

The person who accompanied Cavazos during the shootout has been apprehended and charged with capital murder. The second minor suspect was arrested and charged with first-degree murder.

Meanwhile, authorities said anyone with information should call 512-974-TIPS. A reward of up to $1,000 may be offered for any information that leads to an arrest.

Cavazos’ death is being investigated as the 40th homicide in Austin for 2024.
