An eight-month-old infant burned to death after parents allegedly pushed her into boiling bath water.
Jannah Abughazaleh was found comatose with severe burns, with her parents, Hussein Abughazaleh and Kristina Siedlecki, saying the injuries were caused by a bath she had taken days before.
During the investigation, both parents allegedly acknowledged seeing their child’s burns progress over several days while leaving her in anguish and refusing to seek medical attention. Jannah died from her injuries several days after the alleged incident, and officials have revealed that both parents have been detained on murder charges.
It comes after a Texas woman, Yanira Prado, 22, was charged with capital murder after a medical examiner decided that the newborn infant discovered dead in her toilet was alive at birth.
Police suspect that Prado ‘knowingly and willingly’ killed the baby, although Prado claims she was unaware of the pregnancy. Prado is now being imprisoned at the Ector County Law Enforcement Center on a $1 million bond on allegations of capital murder, tampering with evidence, and immigration violations.
According to an Odessa Police Department press release, officers discovered the youngster on October 9 while responding to a complaint at the woman’s house.
Investigators sought an autopsy, and Prado was then transferred to the adjacent Medical Center Hospital for inspection. The autopsy revealed that the baby was born alive “but suffocated on amniotic fluid, other fluids, and strange fibers.” Police then issued a Capital Warrant for her.
Authorities say Prado was arrested “without incident” last Friday.
According to the Odessa American, Prado claimed authorities she had no idea she was pregnant. According to the records, Prado told investigators she had no idea she was pregnant and assumed she was having a bowel movement when she gave birth.
She acknowledged to using nail clippers to cut the umbilical cord after viewing the baby, and she also stated that she felt lightheaded and couldn’t get up from the toilet. Prado further claimed that the baby did not cry or make any sounds.
According to the investigation, in a panic, Prado texted someone else in the house for help rather than requesting urgent assistance. In a house where no one knew Prado was pregnant, one person even asked her about it because there were no feminine hygiene products in the garbage, according to the article.
