A Texas man was sentenced to 40 years in jail after pleading guilty to his wife’s brutal murder in 2023.

On Wednesday, July 31, Waller County Criminal District Attorney Sean G. Whittmore stated that Jared James Dicus had reached a plea agreement for the murder of his wife, Anggy Diaz.

The pair had only been married for three months when Diaz’s in-laws discovered the 21-year-old’s mutilated body in their home, which they owned.

In a news briefing at the time, Waller County Sheriff Troy Guidry stated that Discus’ father “immediately called” the police after discovering Diaz’s body. Discus allegedly admitted to killing her while being questioned by police.

Dicus will serve his 40-year sentence in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice’s Institutional Division, according to a press release from Whitmore.

Concerns concerning Dicus’ mental ability emerged during the case’s pre-trial phase. However, a court-ordered assessment revealed that he was fit to stand trial.

Dicus relinquished his right to appeal the decision, punishment, and any prospective defense to prosecution, including seeking to invoke an insanity defense later, according to the release.

Diaz’s family was informed of the terms before the plea bargain was signed.

Dicus will become eligible for release in 2043. However, the district attorney states that “eligibility for parole does not imply an automatic grant of parole.”

At the time of Diaz’s murder, Guidry stated that police had previously been summoned to the former couple’s apartment, but “nothing to this effect and level of violence.”

According to the sheriff, the crime will have long-term consequences for both families.

“The best you can say is that this is the world we live in now. It’s a grisly scene. And it will have an impact on both sides of these families, whether the suspect or the victim,” Guidry stated.

“It is gruesome.” It’s a horrific crime. Hopefully, everything works out in the best way possible at this stage,” he added.

According to multiple sources, Diaz had been decapitated.

During a press conference last year, Guidry stated that authorities were met by “a portion of a body, dismembered, and a residence that was covered in blood.”

“Waller County does not tolerate domestic violence,” the district attorney stated on Wednesday.

“Heinous crimes like this one will not go unnoticed, we will seek justice for the victims of domestic abuse and send a message to the perpetrators that here, we fight for our victims,” Whittmore told reporters on Wednesday.” “The DA’s office also thanks the Waller County Sheriff’s Office for their thorough investigation and their service to the victim’s family and to the people of Waller County.”
