A judge in Texas sentenced a man to 40 years in jail for decapitating his newlywed bride last year.

District Court Judge Gary Chaney sentenced 23-year-old Jared James Dicus to 40 years in prison after pleading guilty to the gruesome murder of his wife, Anggy Diaz, last year, according to the Waller County District Attorney’s Office.

Officials stated the couple married in October 2022.

According to the Waller County Sheriff’s Office, on the day of the Jan. 11, 2023 killing, Discus’ parents called 911 to report a death on their property in a small cabin behind their home near Magnolia, which is about 45 miles northwest of downtown Houston. Arriving deputies discovered Diaz dead, decapitated, and dismembered in the cabin, according to officials.

Dicus was seized on the scene, according to the announcement. According to a press statement, when detectives arrived, Discus acknowledged killing his wife.

He was booked into the local jail, and the sheriff’s office claimed that he was detained on a murder charge for his wife’s death.

Police did not reveal a reason for the homicide, but prosecutors stated that during the pre-trial portion of the case, “potential mental health issues were raised regarding the Defendant’s competency to stand trial.”

However, after a court-ordered competency examination, Discus was found competent.
