During the process of returning an inmate to his cell, a detention officer in Texas who was 28 years old was allegedly attacked by the convict. The officer lost his life as a result of the attack.

This information was disclosed by Ellis County Sheriff Brad Norman during a press conference on Tuesday. Officer Isaiah Bias was reportedly slain on Monday during the alleged assault that took place at the jail.

“It’s with great sadness that we stand here today and acknowledge the loss of one of our own. … Isaiah Bias, 28 years of age, was a dedicated detention officer with over six years of service to the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office,” Norman stated.

Norman referred to the alleged assault carried out by Aaron Thompson, who is 45 years old, as “pure evil,” but he did not reveal any specifics of the manner in which Bias was slain.

“Most of the time, law enforcement officers and detention officers deal with good folks having a bad day. Occasionally, we deal with bad folks,” Norman stated. “I can honestly say that my staff over the last day has dealt with pure evil.”

According to Norman, Thompson was charged with capital murder, and he said that he will be proposing that the death penalty be applied.

“It was a heinous, horrific, purposeful murder that was senseless and not needed,” Norman stated. “The ultimate decision will be made by the district attorney’s office, whether or not they seek the death penalty in this case. If I have anything to say about it, that’s exactly what will happen, but the ultimate decision lies on the DA’s office.”

Thompson allegedly punched Bias, which knocked him to the ground. After that, he then began choking him and beating him in the head with his fist, knee, and foot. This information was obtained by KDFW from an affidavit that was included in the arrest warrant.

After that, Thompson allegedly moved to a table and sat down, leaving Bias in a “large pool of blood.” This was stated in the affidavit.

A month ago, Thompson was arrested and booked into jail on three counts of assault on a public worker and avoiding arrest. According to Norman, Thompson was placed in solitary confinement for a total of twenty-three hours each day.

According to Norman, he first became acquainted with Bias when he was a young guy participating in the explorer program at the correctional facility.

“He wanted to be in law enforcement. He came in to work for the jail,” Norman said. “You can work in the jail when you are 18. You can’t be a peace officer in Texas until you’re 21,” Norman stated.

“His sister’s baby was a week old, and he was able to see the baby the day it was born,” Norman stated. “He loved what he did. The people around him loved him. Law enforcement was a career path he loved.”

The Texas Rangers have assumed responsibility for the investigation into the homicide. During the arraignment, Thompson was given a bond amount of two million dollars.
