A girl who is 12 years old and currently resides in Tennessee has been charged with murder. She is suspected of suffocating her cousin who is 8 years old as the younger child was sleeping. An iPhone was the source of contention between them, according to a relative.

During the murder that took place on July 15 in Humboldt, Tennessee, the county prosecutor stated that a security camera captured the event inside the bedroom that they shared.

According to a statement released by Gibson District Attorney Frederick Agee, the footage shows the older child using blankets to suffocate her relative while the younger girl slept in the top bunk.

The juvenile “cleaned up the victim and repositioned her body,” according to Agee, after the youngster had passed away. When the girls returned from their trip out of town to be with their grandmother, a relative told WREG-TV in Memphis that they had been bickering about an iPhone.

Following the acquisition of the footage by the authorities on Wednesday, the young lady was charged with first-degree murder as well as tampering with evidence.

According to Agee stated in the statement, “I consider this to be one of the most disturbing violent acts committed by either an adult or a juvenile that my office has prosecuted.”

“A lengthier sentence, whether that will be through incarceration or supervision with court-ordered conditions,” he added, explaining that he will seek a judge to prosecute the girl, who will turn 13 later this month, in adult court. This would allow for “a longer sentence.”
