LOS ANGELES – According to the United States Geological Survey, an earthquake of a magnitude of 3.9 was felt in Southern California on Thursday morning before noon.
At around 9:39 a.m. local time, the earthquake struck, with the epicenter being approximately 4 miles west of Lake Elsinore, which is situated approximately 70 miles southeast of Los Angeles. The earthquake also occurred at a depth of almost 5.5 miles. According to reports, the shaking was felt in several areas of the metropolitan area of Los Angeles.
Less than a minute after the initial earthquake, the region was shaken by an aftershock that had a magnitude of 3.0. This is the second earthquake that has been felt in the Los Angeles area this week. On Monday, at approximately 12:20 p.m. local time, a magnitude 4.4 earthquake shook the region.
During this year, Southern California has been the site of thirteen earthquakes with a magnitude of 4.0 or above, according to a report that was broadcast on FOX 11 and reported by seismologist Lucy Jones.
This number is more than the average number of five earthquakes that have occurred annually in Southern California over the past twenty years, but it is closer to the average number of earthquakes that have occurred annually with a magnitude of 4.0 over the preceding ninety years.
