An accident that was so severe that it lasted for more than twelve hours caused Highway 99 to be closed in both directions between Highway 91 and King George Boulevard.
Both the late evening rush hour on Thursday and the early morning rush hour on Friday were difficult to navigate due to the shutdown.
At approximately 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, a multi-vehicle accident took place at the Highway 91 interchange, which resulted in the closure of the state highway that connects Surrey and Delta.
Nine vehicles were involved, according to the Surrey Police Service.
One vehicle was seen on the side of the road with its roof up, as captured on video from the scene of the accident. The last two were rolled onto their sides at the very least.
Seven persons were treated at the scene, according to the British Columbia Emergency Health Services, which included the dispatch of an air ambulance for assistance. On Friday morning, the Surrey Police Service said that two of the six people who were rushed to the hospital were in critical condition.
Ian MacDonald, who works for the Surrey Police Service, stated that the causes of the incident involving multiple vehicles are still being investigated.
According to MacDonald, “We anticipate that the ongoing investigation will have an impact during the rush hour period on the traffic and the road.”
Calling the police is a request made to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who may have dashcam footage of the event.
