On Thursday, June 13, a San Diego County man was charged with murder, and the lady who died after a Riverside County sheriff’s deputy fatally shot her was identified. The man and deputy apparently battled for the deputy’s gun. Jennifer Rose Dobbins, 30, of Imperial Beach, died at Riverside Community Hospital at 2:39 a.m. on June 11, approximately 90 minutes after being wounded in the incident on W. Sixth Street in Corona.
Eric John Nourani, 32, was also charged with attempted murder of a peace officer, mayhem, resisting arrest, and resisting arrest causing grievous bodily harm, according to the criminal complaint. On Thursday afternoon, Nourani appeared in Riverside Superior Court and pled not guilty to all charges. He is represented by the Public Defender’s Office.
Nourani was being held at the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside in exchange for $2 million.
The charges could result in a life term in jail, according to the lawsuit.
According to eastbaytimes, a person can be charged with murder if they show “reckless indifference to human life” that causes the death of another, even if they did not physically inflict the fatal injury. Because the exact specifics of the altercation and shooting have not been released, it was unclear Thursday whether the deputy fired at the lady who had entered the conflict on purpose or if the gun discharged unintentionally.
The Sheriff’s Department declined to comment on the relationship between Dobbins and Nourani. A deputy approached people on Sixth Street at 1:11 a.m. on Tuesday. He pursued them when they fled. The Sheriff’s Department stated that Nourani assaulted the deputy as he approached a curve. As they struggled, a lady identified as Dobbins attempted to assault the deputy and was shot, according to the agency.
The deputy was treated in a hospital and then released. The department declined to characterize his injuries.
The state Attorney General’s Office is looking into the shooting under the statute, which compels the Department of Justice to investigate fatal shootings of unarmed individuals by peace officers.
