Oregon residents participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) have the option to request replacement benefits to compensate for food losses incurred due to winter storms.
The Oregon Department of Human Services has indicated that individuals receiving SNAP benefits can qualify for replacement funds if they had to dispose of food that became unsafe to consume as a result of power outages, which were widespread in the aftermath of the recent ice and snow events.
Jake Sunderland, spokesperson for the Oregon Department of Human Services, mentioned that those affected may be required to provide evidence such as proof of address, communications from a utility company, or other documentation demonstrating the impact of the storm.
He further stated that applicants need to report the lost food and its associated cost, but the submission of receipts is not mandatory.
10 Days to Request SNAP Replacement Benefits
Officials from the Oregon Department of Human Services (DHS) have announced that participants in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) are eligible to seek replacement benefits for food that was lost or deemed unsafe to consume due to power outages resulting from this week’s winter storms.
However, individuals must submit their replacement benefit request within 10 calendar days of the food loss.
The maximum amount that can be requested is equivalent to the regular monthly benefit received by the household, as stated by DHS officials. Upon approval of the request, the replacement benefits are credited to the household’s existing electronic benefits transfer card.
