Mr. Alfred Hugh Don Hughes, age 79 of Summerville, Georgia passed away Sunday, April 4, 2021 at his residence. 

Mr. Hughes was born in Summerville, Georgia on March 1, 1942, son of the late A.L. Hughes and Dorothy Alred Hughes.  He was retired in 2010 from the Chattooga County Public Works, but had been employed as a butcher at Lucky’s in Lyerly, the Piggly Wiggly, the Home Store and had also worked with his brother, Herbert, doing tractor services.  Mr. Hughes was a veteran of the United States Army, where he earned a Purple Heart, serving during the Viet Nam war.  Hugh Don enjoyed the simple life and loved to be outdoors, whether it be fishing, hunting or gardening.

Mr. Hughes is survived by his daughter, Buffie Hughes; brother, Herbert Hughes; granddaughter, Maloane Hughes; great gradchild, Rylan Hughes and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Mr. Hughes will be held Wednesday, April 7, 2021 at 1:00 P.M. in the Petitt Chapel of the Coffman Funeral Home with Rev. Jim Chasteen officiating.  Interment will follow in the Little Sand Mountain Baptist Church Cemetery with the Shanklin-Attaway Post 5 of the American Legion Honor Guard in charge of full military honors.

Pallbearers will be Joe Reed, Stacy Young, David Alred, Wayne Hall, Wayne Reece and Larry Weesner.  Honorary Pallbearers will be Ken Waters, Lloyd Waters, Jim Woodard, David Tidmore and Steve Alred.

Mr. Hughes will be in state at the Coffman Funeral Home where the family will receive friends Wednesday from 12:00 Noon until the funeral hour.

The family of Mr. Hughes, and the staff of Coffman Funeral Home, reminds anyone that plans to attend the services, to please follow the CDC guidelines as it pertains to social distancing and social gatherings. Facemasks are not required, but are strongly encouraged.
