A 23-year-old North Texas man who hid fentanyl tablets in his child’s plush bear has received his sentence.
On Tuesday, Jorge Miguel Arteaga Medina of Dallas was sentenced to eight years in federal prison. He pleaded guilty in February to possessing a controlled drug with the intent to distribute. According to plea documents, Medina obtained fentanyl tablets from a source in Mexico identified to agents as “22” and sold them to consumers in the Dallas region.
In February 2023, a confidential source purchased 171 grams of fentanyl tablets from Medina. During the taped discussion, Medina instructed the source to call him if they needed additional fentanyl tablets in the future.
According to court filings, the anonymous source contacted Medina about a month later and requested additional tablets.

Medina stated that he had around 3,000 tablets in his hands but that if the source needed more, he would need to call his boss in Mexico, who is thought to be “22”.
When officials discovered that Medina was being investigated, he acknowledged having a large number of medications in his flat, as well as a Smith & Wesson revolver inside the bag strapped to his chest.
He then took the agents to his flat, where his wife and little child lived, and showed them the tablets. Some were in a bedroom closet, while the rest were hidden in his child’s pet bear.
The Drug Enforcement Administration’s Dallas Field Division led the investigation. George Leal, an assistant United States attorney, prosecuted the case.
