A South Florida mother is facing charges of child neglect after her tragic actions resulted in the deaths of her 3-year-old children.

It was stated that a 42-year-old woman named Shirlene Napoleon Alcime got off a Miami overpass on Feb. 2 in what appeared to be a suicide attempt. Unfortunately, she later discovered her twin toddlers, Milendhet and Milendhere Napoleon-Cadet, unresponsive.

Incarceration looms for Alcime as she faces charges of child neglect causing great bodily harm, following her booking into jail on Thursday, as indicated by online jail records.

The accused was taken into custody on February 6 and currently has no bond set. The news of the change was initially reported by WTVJ, WSVN, and the Miami Herald.

According to the website of the Miami-Dade County Clerk of the Court and Comptroller, a hearing has been scheduled for February 27.

Despite PEOPLE’s request for information on Friday, the Miami-Dade Police Department has not promptly responded. Similarly, a defense attorney linked to Alcime has yet to provide a comment in response to PEOPLE’s request on the same day.

Details from an arrest report, acquired by WTVJ, unveil the mother’s admission that she contemplated taking her own life and that of her twins over a two-month period, citing financial woes and accumulating debts as the driving factors. Over the past two years, reports from WTVJ indicate that she faced eviction proceedings and held ownership in several South Florida businesses.

Additional Charges Considered in Alcime’s Case

The Miami-Dade Police Department hinted at the potential for additional charges based on Alcime’s toxicology results, as reported by the Herald.

According to law enforcement sources cited by the outlet, Alcime purportedly disclosed her contemplation of jumping off a ramp while holding her children or throwing them off individually, yet she ultimately left them inside her SUV as she took the plunge herself.

A tow truck driver offered assistance to Alcime, who revealed that her children were unresponsive in the SUV, according to the Herald, citing the arrest report. As the tow truck driver administered CPR to Alcime’s son and the police approached, the mother leaped from the ramp.

According to the Miami Herald, investigators said on Thursday that the children were declared dead at Jackson North Medical Center after they were found foaming at the mouth. Alcime claimed to have no idea about what happened resulting in her children’s death.

Milson Cadet, the father of the twins, expressed profound grief, stating in Haitian Creole, “Justice will have to do its work.” He added, “I just want to definitely know what happened. I just want to know what happened.”

As previously detailed by multiple news outlets, the discovery of the two toddlers in the backseat of the SUV occurred at 2 a.m. on the northbound lanes of the Interstate 95 ramp near the Turnpike extension on February 2.

Initially deemed in critical condition, the mother was transported to the hospital, as per police statements.
