A 75-year-old man who had been lost for four days was found alive last week in a bog near a scenic overlook at Maine’s Mount Blue State Park.
The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife said in a news release that Michael Altmaier, from New Sharon, was supposed to be at a meeting in Weld last Monday but never showed up. He was first looked for by the Maine Warden Service on Friday morning.
He was found in a bog around 3:45 p.m. Friday, less than a mile from the beautiful overlook at Mount Blue State Park. His car was later found there.
“It is believed Altmaier had fallen over a ledged embankment Monday and likely became disoriented and ended up in the area of the bog that evening where he eventually had fallen and was unable to get up,” the fish and wildlife agency said. Altmaier was helped by first responders until around 6 p.m. when a helicopter came and took him to an ambulance that was going to a nearby hospital, where he was watched overnight.

A rescue team said Altmaier was in “surprisingly good condition” considering he had been lying in the bog for four days. No one knows what’s wrong with him.
Among others, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department and Maine Search and Rescue Dogs helped the Maine Warden Service with the rescue.
