A guy in Nevada, 28 years old, is accused of killing his girlfriend’s 17-month-old son by beating him to death. The medical examiner said it was one of the worst cases of abuse he had ever seen.

Records looked at by Law&Crime show that Christian Moniz Rabino was arrested last week and charged with killing Kai Tesoro. He was charged with one count of first-degree murder and two counts of child abuse or neglect resulting in serious physical harm.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department replied to a 911 call on June 1 about a toddler who wasn’t breathing, according to KLAS, a CBS affiliate in Las Vegas. When first responders got to the scene, they found the child, who they later named Kai, and took him to the Summerlin Pediatrics Emergency Room right away to get help.

When Kai got to the hospital, doctors said they saw bruises on his head and multiple brain bleeds that they thought were caused by “non-accidental trauma,” most likely from shaking violently. A doctor told the police that the abuse was “one of the worst cases he had ever seen” in his work.

The child also had a broken leg, which the station said was probably caused by “a large amount of force.”

A news story from KVVU in Henderson, Nevada, says that Moniz Rabino told police at the hospital that he was watching Kai and called 911 because the boy was having trouble breathing and then stopped breathing. He said Kai had been sick with a fever for a few days.

The hospital workers said that Kai’s mother told them that Kai had recently fallen off the bed. According to KVVU, the medical staff wrote in their report that the boy’s injuries did not match up with such a fall.

At the hospital on June 1, the child was given a machine that would keep them alive. Because of his injuries, he died. On June 6, he was taken off of life support and declared dead. His family told the news media that his parts were given to help other children in need.

A person who saw what happened told police that Moniz Rabino hurt Kai and that Kai’s mother lied when she said he fell off the bed (KLAS). He or she also said that Moniz Rabino persuaded Kai’s mother that her son did not need to go to the hospital for care.

After that, Kai’s mother allegedly said in an interview that she had seen Moniz Rabino hurt Kai physically at least once.

Authorities say that Kai’s father, Moniz Rabino, lost his temper when he saw him struggling to walk and threw Kai to the ground, feet first. KVVU reported that Kai’s two legs were broken during the angry reaction.

She also said she saw Moniz Rabino get mad at Kai for crying and shake him hard at least once.

Moniz Rabino is being held at the Clark County Detention Center without bond right now. Records show that he is set to go to court on August 7 for a preliminary hearing.
