BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- A 27-year-old man is in custody after allegedly killing his ex-girlfriend’s teen daughter and injuring her son last week.
According to the Birmingham Police Department, police arrived at the Park Place apartments on June 19, soon after midnight, and discovered a 15-year-old female and a 5-year-old boy with apparent gunshot wounds. Firefighters pronounced the youngster, subsequently identified by officers as Cornelia Lathan, dead. The youngster was taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
Police allege that Otis Montgomery III shot the victims following a domestic dispute. According to reports, he is the victim’s mother’s ex-boyfriend. According to AL.com, the mother is pregnant and has been transferred to a hospital for observation.
According to truecrimenews, Montgomery allegedly opened fire in the parking area of the apartment complex. Witnesses reported hearing several bullets before Montgomery escaped on foot.
Within an hour of the shooting, officers had located Montgomery. He is charged with capital murder, attempted murder, and shooting a handgun into an occupied residence. Montgomery remains in the Jefferson County Jail without bond.
Police Chief Scott Thurmond told AL.com that officers were summoned to the apartment earlier in the day for a verbal domestic disturbance and that they had previously attended to domestic incidents there.
