A Los Angeles high school student was discovered dead in a campus pool, prompting an investigation into the tragedy.
The Los Angeles Unified School District student was discovered early Monday morning at the Miguel Contreras Learning Complex, according to the LA School Police Department. Police have not released the pupil’s name, just identifying them as “a student from the Miguel Contreras school community.”
“We immediately notified law enforcement and are following Los Angeles Unified protocols,” the agency stated. “We are working closely with the Los Angeles School Police Department, the LAPD, and the Coroner’s Office on this issue. This inquiry is ongoing, and more details will be shared as they become available.”
The swimming pool where the student was discovered will be closed until further notice, according to officials, but the school will remain open. Counselors are accessible to any students and workers who need help processing this tragedy.
“On behalf of our entire school community, I want to offer my deepest condolences,” a representative for the Los Angeles School Police Department said in a statement. “At this time, we ask that the privacy of those affected be maintained during this difficult period. Please know that our entire school community is here to help you.”

The death of the LAUSD student comes just two months after a Chino High School student and potential football player died at the school’s swimming center in June. Chino is around 40 miles east of Los Angeles.
Chino Valley Unified School District authorities reported that the event occurred at 3 p.m. on June 28. Jason Phan, 14, of Ontario, was an incoming freshman football player who was retrieved from the pool by medical personnel following an apparent medical issue.
When first responders came, the teen was not breathing, and they discovered a coach performing CPR on the pool deck, according to a police report. Phan was rushed to Chino Valley Medical Center, where he briefly regained a pulse before being pronounced dead at Children’s Hospital Orange County.
The cause of death has yet to be determined, but the report states that Phan was at a football team swim party when the medical issue occurred.
“The victim, along with a few other pupils, was in the deep end of the pool when a witness discovered him near the bottom and called for help. According to the report, witnesses hauled the victim to the surface.
