In Indiana, a mother and father are behind bars on homicide charges in connection with the death of their diabetic daughter.

Alice Ruby Bredhold, twelve, died on July 4.

Ashley Marie Bredhold, 38, and Brent Michael Bredhold, 38, were arrested and charged with abandonment of a dependent resulting in death on August 7, according to Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office jail records.

Alice was discovered dead on her bedroom floor at the family’s home on South New York Avenue in Evansville, according to affidavits acquired by Evansville-based NBC affiliate WFIE.

An investigation revealed that the girl had diabetes, but her parents were not assisting her in managing the chronic condition.

According to authorities, the state’s Department of Child Services contacted the Bredhold family because Alice’s blood sugar levels were consistently high at school.

It is still unclear how long those blood sugar test findings appear to have been overlooked. It’s also unclear how long the child protection department worked with the family.

According to the Vanderburgh County Coroner, Alice died of diabetic ketosis, a dangerous illness that, according to the Mayo Clinic, causes a variety of telltale symptoms. According to police, authorities subsequently removed two other children from the Bredhold residence. The residence was said to be filthy and infested with vermin.

Alice attended Evans Elementary School and played cello in the school orchestra, according to a dedication to the kid. Alice was an ardent reader and a member of a local book club. She was also a member of a young team dedicated to scientific research into rocks, fossils, and minerals.

“Alice was naturally artistic and creative, and enjoyed doing crafts and drawing,” reads the notice of death. “She loved spending time with her family and friends. Alice will be remembered for her enthusiastic, active, and kind personality. “She will be greatly missed.”

After nearly a month of inquiry, police arrested the girl’s parents on warrants on Wednesday afternoon.

Under Indiana law, neglect is a first-degree crime. This is because the parents are over the age of 18, and the girl was under the age of 14 when she died.

As of this writing, both suspects were incarcerated in the Vanderburgh County Jail on a $100,000 bond. Their initial hearings are slated for Thursday afternoon in Vanderburgh Circuit Court, according to Indiana court records.

Law&Crime submitted a public records request to the Evansville Police Department for additional documents connected to this topic.
