Sunday marks Day 4 of a heat wave in the Delaware Valley, with highs in the low 90s and a heat index (feels-like temperature) of up to 100 degrees.
However, it appears that the heat from Sunday will not be subsiding anytime soon. The National Weather Service issued a Heat Advisory for most of our region from 10 a.m. Monday to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with maximum heat index values of near 100 degrees.
The maximum heat index will be across southeast Pennsylvania and much of New Jersey, except the coastal strip and northern Delaware.
However, today’s heat and humidity will be less severe than yesterday’s since a weak cold front passed through the area early this morning, temporarily shifting the wind to the north and bringing in slightly drier air.
Isolated thunderstorms are expected again today, with brief rain showers offering relief from the heat. However, the majority of the area will remain dry, and storms are not forecast to be severe.
The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for Burlington and Ocean counties in New Jersey until 8 p.m. Sunday after radar detected pop-up thunderstorms.
Looking ahead to next week, we’ll start hot and humid with temperatures in the 90s through Wednesday, followed by a modest cool-down with highs in the upper 80s and low 90s by mid-week. However, the somewhat cooler temperatures bring a greater possibility of showers and storms, thanks in part to the leftovers of Hurricane Beryl.
Uncertain weather is likely to linger with us until at least the start of next weekend, so stay tuned and keep an eye on the sky!
Beryl heads toward Texas
Relief from the heat may be on the way by mid-week, as Beryl’s remnants cross the region. The once-powerful Hurricane is now a tropical storm heading for the Texas coast. It is forecast to re-strengthen to a Category 1 storm before making landfall late tonight between Corpus Christie and Houston.
Heavy rain and flooding are the main concerns, with up to 6″ of rain in certain regions. Beryl will then quickly travel northeast, weakening to a residual low by Tuesday AM.
That leftover low will unite with a cold front and be guided toward the Ohio Valley by Wednesday, bringing rain and thunderstorms to the Philadelphia area Wednesday night and Friday. The heaviest rainfall is expected on Thursday CBSNEWS stated.
