Today’s high temperatures rose up to 16 degrees above normal and reached the 50s, so it definitely did not feel like December. The temperatures won’t remain this high for the remainder of the week.
Actually, a number of clipper-type systems that will go through the area beginning Tuesday will cause them to fluctuate between pleasant and cool. Overnight sky will be largely cloudy ahead of this initial shortwave.
Typically, lows will be around the 20s. On Tuesday, this system will move from northwest Nebraska to southeast Nebraska. In extreme northern areas, such as Valentine, Ainsworth, and O’Neill, there may be some snow showers.
Although it will be slightly colder, the far northern regions of the region will see the largest change, with highs in the mid-30s. Highs in the 40s and lower 50s are expected in the remainder of the region.
The southwest and southeast will see the mildest temperatures. Tuesday night, as lows drop into the upper 10s and lower 20s, the clouds will disperse.
The sun will return on Wednesday, and the winds won’t be too high. While it will already be warming up in the west, it will be cold in the east.
Eastern Nebraska will only see highs in the mid to upper 30s, which is about typical. The temperature in western Nebraska will return to the low to mid-fifty degree range. Highs for the remainder in the middle will be in the 40s.
Most of the region will see milder temperatures on Thursday, but the following cold front will already start cooling down the northern regions.
The majority of the region experiences temperatures in the 50s, while the north will have highs in the 40s.
In northern Kansas and far southern Nebraska, temperatures of 60° or higher are possible. Strong winds will be Thursday’s only drawback.
The end of the week will bring temperatures that are significantly lower, although the western region of the state will not be affected as much by this change.
Over the central and eastern parts of Nebraska, the highest temperatures will only be in the mid 20s and 30s, but to the west, the highest temperatures will still be in the 40s and lower 50s. As we move into the following week, Sunday will serve as the turning point for a pleasant warm-up.
The maximum temperatures for Sunday will vary from the upper 30s in the east to the lower 50s in the west. Monday’s high temperatures are expected to range from the lower 40s in the northeast to the upper 50s in the west.
It’s possible that the Christmas Eve (Tuesday) and Christmas Day (Wednesday) days will have the most favorable weather conditions.
The majority of people will reach their 50s, and I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of some people reaching their 60s. In certain areas of Northeast Nebraska, the temperature might continue to be in the 40s.
