The 35-year-old mother was reported missing by her family on Sunday, July 14.

Five days later, just after 5:30 p.m., Atlanta police claim they discovered Chanell Crosby “unresponsive” on Metro Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority property.

According to a preliminary statement given last week by the Atlanta Police Department, police are currently investigating her death “to determine when and where the incident occurred.”

Chanell’s cause of death is unknown.

When contacted via email Wednesday afternoon, Atlanta Police Department spokesman John T. Predmore declined to answer questions about the case, saying the investigation into her death “remains active and ongoing.”

According to 11Alive, Chanell was seeking justice in the homicide of her 13-year-old son, Jamiren Crosby, who was shot to death after leaving home with friends in September 2022. His body was discovered behind a townhouse in Lithonia, Georgia, about 18 miles from Atlanta. According to the outlet, no one has yet been detained in connection with his death.

Darrio “Polo” Giles, Chanell’s brother, was found shot to death at an apartment complex on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive SW in Atlanta on April 20, 2022. On Wednesday, Predmore revealed that no one had been arrested in connection with his case.

Chanell established a foundation in their family name, which, she stated in a June 2023 interview with WSB-TV, “focuses on gun violence, police brutality, and community service.”

“We went around painting shelters and donating to children’s and women’s shelters,” she told the site of the foundation’s activities.

In an earlier interview with Fox 5 Atlanta, she described her son as a “helper,” adding that he cared for her younger daughter and son. She said it straight-An eighth-grader had just made the ATL Elite Football squad.

In an interview with 11 Alive, she also said that her son had asked her to be his date to his fifth-grade dance. After missing her prom, she stated that it was a wonderful do-over with her son.

With his death, she made it her job to ensure that people would not “forget about Jamiren’s case,” she told WSB-TV, adding that she believed “there are people out there” who could provide answers.

Vanessa Wilson Lewis, who described herself as an “auntie” on a GoFundMe page set up to help pay for Chanell’s funeral and care for her three remaining children, said the mother “brought so much love and light into our lives.”

“Tragedy has struck for the third time with the untimely murder of our beloved Chanell Crosby,” she stated, adding that the mother “succumbed to violence.”

Chanell’s death is not currently being investigated as a homicide by police.
