Authorities claimed a Georgia sheriff’s deputy was killed after he was hit by an Alabama police vehicle following a cross-state chase early Thursday morning.
Deputy Sheriff Eric Minix was chasing a suspect accused of stealing a car at 2 a.m. Thursday, according to the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office. The pursuit began on Interstate 85 south and crossed the Chattahoochee River into Chambers County, Alabama, where the officer from the Lanett Police Department was killed.
Minix was brought to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead.
“We lost a good deputy.” We have mourned the loss of a decent man. “We have lost a good friend,” said the department on Facebook.
Minix, a deputy and a K-9 officer, is survived by his wife and three daughters. The wanted person has been apprehended.
According to the Lanett Police Department, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency has taken the lead in the investigation, and the officer driving the car that hit Minix has been placed on administrative leave.
“Please keep all involved in your thoughts and prayers,” the department said in a statement.
