A foster mother in Indiana is accused of killing a 10-year-old child by laying on top of him, according to court documents acquired by numerous news sites.
Jennifer Lee Wilson, a sought homicide suspect, was detained on July 13 in Berrien County, Mich., when a license plate camera spotted her vehicle, according to a Berrien County Sheriff’s Office press statement received by PEOPLE.
Wilson, 48, was issued an arrest warrant for reckless homicide a little more than two months after the 10-year-old died on April 25 due to a medical emergency.
Officers rushed to a residence in Liberty Township, Ind., that afternoon and transported the boy to a local hospital, where he was declared dead, according to the release.
Authorities named the youngster as Dakota Levi Stevens, according to court documents obtained by NBC5, WGN-TV, and The Indianapolis Star. According to The Indianapolis Star, the Department of Child Services put Levi with Wilson approximately a month before he died.
According to the records, Wilson acknowledged laying on the youngster for about five minutes until he stopped moving.
“Wilson stated that when she attempted to stop him from leaving, she does not know if she tackled Dakota or they fell to the ground, however, she intended to hold him,” authorities allege in court records cited by NBC5.
Authorities also looked into Ring video footage from the residence. According to The Indianapolis Star, Wilson is allegedly seen lying on the boy’s head and neck while he screams. In another video, she allegedly says, “I was laying on him and he was acting bad.”

According to documents obtained by NBC 5, Wilson then started performing CPR and dialed 911. According to an autopsy cited by the publication, Dakota died as a result of mechanical asphyxia and was a homicide. He weighed 91 pounds at the time of his death, compared to Wilson’s 340 pounds, according to the publication.
According to PEOPLE, Wilson had other foster children who were later removed from the family. A spokesman for the agency confirmed to the site that her license is on hold pending revocation.
It is unclear whether Wilson has entered a plea or hired an attorney to speak on her behalf.
Dakota was described in his obituary as someone who “loved the outdoors” and “marched to the beat of his drum.”
