The deaths of three-year-old Florida twins discovered in the back of their mother’s car in February have been ruled homicides, which means the mother may face additional charges.
Shirlene Alcime, 42, was initially charged with child negligence after Miami-Dade police reported that her two children, Milendhet and Milendhere Napoleon-Cadet, were discovered comatose in the back of her car on February 2.
Before the twins were discovered, officials said Alcime jumped off an overpass in an apparent suicide attempt.
According to NBC Miami, Local 10, and the Miami Herald, the medical examiner’s office has now determined that the twins’ deaths were homicides. According to NBC Miami, Miami-Dade police are working with the state’s attorney’s office to determine whether the mother will face murder or a related offense.
Local 10 stated that Alcime had previously pleaded not guilty to child neglect.
Local 10 previously claimed that the twins were found foaming at the lips. Police said they were taken to the hospital and pronounced dead.
In February, police said that Alcime jumped over the I-95 wall in Miami and “fell from a considerable height” onto railroad lines. Alcide was in critical condition following the event, but he is now being held without bond, according to jail records.
