Officials have reportedly identified the guy who died in a shooting at a Donald Trump rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, July 13.

According to CNN, Reuters, and The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the man is 50-year-old firefighter Corey Comperatore.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro stated at a press conference on Sunday, June 14, that Comperatore “died trying to protect his family.”

“Corey was a girl’s father. Corey was a fireman. The lawmaker told The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that Corey attended church every Sunday. “He was so excited last night to be there with [Trump] and the community.”

Dawn Comperatore Schafer, Comperatore’s sister, posted on Facebook that the PA Trump Rally took the life of her brother, Corey Comperatore. The one man we loved the most died as a result of our hatred for another. He was a hero who guarded his girls. His wife and daughters just went through the terrible and unimaginable.”

“Saturday night, our friend and family, Allyson, lost her father due to a senseless, tragic act at the Trump Rally in Butler,” a message on the fundraiser website reads. Dan Laurent, a spokeswoman for Allegheny General Hospital, previously told PEOPLE that two additional people were gravely injured at the demonstration. The shooter was also confirmed dead after being “neutralized” by Secret Service officials, according to spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi in a post on X, the old Twitter.

Trump, 78, said on Truth Social that he was “shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear.”

The former president, who was in the middle of speaking when shots were fired, was safely removed from the scene. Officials have confirmed that the incident was an assassination attempt.

Butler County District Attorney Richard Goldinger told PEOPLE that the shooter was on a building outside the event.

The FBI leads the inquiry.

“Special agents from the FBI Pittsburgh Field Office responded immediately, including crisis response team members and evidence response technicians,” the bureau claimed in a statement to PEOPLE. “We will continue to support this investigation with the full resources of the FBI, alongside our partners at the U.S. Secret Service and state and local law enforcement.”
