On Friday, a man who had been employed as a swim coach for the Boulder Swimming Club squad during the latter part of the 1990s and the early 2000s was given a sentence that ranged from 42 years to life in prison.
During April, a jury decided that Jon Beber, who was 54 years old at the time, was responsible for two charges of sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust – a pattern of abuse, as well as one count of sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust. Both qualify as felonies.
The “lengthy” sentence was referred to as “the right outcome” by District Attorney Michael Doughtery in a press release issued by the 20th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
The court observed that this kind of situation is every parent’s worst fear, and Doughtery echoed that sentiment. “When parents drop their children off at school or practice, they do so with the belief that the adults in charge are not abusing the trust that they have placed in them.
Exactly that was done by this defendant for several years. It is only due to the bravery and determination of the victims that we were able to pursue charges all these years later and ensure that justice was served to them and their families.
Beber was given the following sentences, which were to be served in sequential order by the court:
Individuals who are found guilty of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust are sentenced to 18 years to life in prison, followed by 20 years to life on parole for each charge of sexual assault.
For sexual assault on a child committed by a person in a position of trust, the defendant was sentenced to six years in the Department of Corrections, followed by ten years to life in prison on parole.

Following the disclosure of three victims in 2022, the 20th Judicial District Attorney’s Office initiated an investigation into the issue, which ultimately resulted in the filing of charges against Beber. Between 1997 and 2001, Beber was accused of sexually abusing underage swimmers. The allegations were made.
During the period that Beber was a member of the swim team, some allegations surfaced against him; however, there were no official complaints that were made against him during that time.
It is stated that parents approached the swim coach at the time about inappropriate sexual interaction with many swimmers who were under the age of 18. According to the investigators, this was the reason he retired from the team and left Colorado in the year 2002.
