Believe it or not, many of Americans are entitled to SNAP benefits but have not applied for them. Some people may be hesitant to apply because they wish to be self-sufficient, even if it requires significant financial investment.
Others may not be aware that they qualify for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program in their state. If you’ve never heard of SNAP, it’s precisely the same as Food Stamps. Some states may refer to it by a different name. In California, it is referred to as CalFresh.

How to apply for SNAP benefits
All you need to do is locate your local Food Stamps office. To identify locations, refer to this US government website: https://www.fns.usda.gov/snap/statedirectory. Then, choose your state and apply for a monthly payment.
Then, if necessary, you may schedule an appointment on the official website or by calling your local office. For example, if you live in California, you can contact 877-847-3663 to claim a USDA payment.

What are the qualifying requirements for SNAP benefits?
Income Limits:
Your household’s gross monthly income should be at or below 130% of the federal poverty level. As of 2024, the monthly cost for a household of three is $2,353.
The net monthly income (gross income minus permitted deductions) must be at or below 100% of the poverty line, which is $1,830 for a family of three.
Households with elderly or handicapped members are only needed to fulfill the net income requirement.
Resource/asset Limitations:
Households without an elderly or handicapped member must have assets totaling $2,750 or less.
Households with an elderly or handicapped member must have assets totaling $4,250 or less.
Certain resources, such as a house and lot, most retirement plans, and some automobiles, are not included.
Work Requirements:
To receive SNAP for more than 3 months in 36 months, able-bodied people without dependents must work at least 20 hours per week or enroll in a job program.
Children, old citizens, pregnant women, and individuals with disabilities are excluded from job obligations.
Citizenship/Legal Status:
Eligibility for SNAP includes U.S. citizens, green card holders, and refugees who satisfy certain qualifications.
Undocumented immigrants and those on certain temporary visas are not eligible, regardless of money or resources.
