An 81-year-old driver is facing additional charges weeks after police say he struck a boat trailer that had been pulled over on a Yarmouth street, killing a 14-year-old boy and his uncle who were attempting to perform roadside repairs.
Peter Richmond of Yarmouth Port has been charged with a second count of motor vehicular murder by reckless operation in connection with the August 30 incident on North Main Street, Yarmouth police announced Monday.
Cornelius Allen Bottomley, 54, of Hanover, died from his injuries on September 13, according to an obituary. His nephew, Norwell resident John Hughan, died in the crash. Police reported another individual was critically hurt in the crash, but they have not been identified.
Bottomley and his nephew were pulling the boat when their trailer’s axle snapped. They got out of their truck and were attempting to fix it when a Cadillac SUV driven by Richmond collided with the boat trailer from behind, striking the victims.
Several others contacted 911 to report that someone was trapped between the boat and the truck just south of the Great Western Road intersection.
“The Yarmouth Police Department extends their condolences and deepest sympathy to the families who have been impacted by this tragic incident,” the organization said in a statement.
Police did not specify when Richmond was scheduled to appear in court.
Uncle and nephew are recognized for their kindness.
Bottomley was the vice president of treasury and financial operations for Granite Telecommunications in Quincy, according to his obituary. He is survived by his wife and two children.
