WEST PARK, Florida: Following the announcement by Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives that a teacher was discovered dead on the Florida Turnpike after falling off a moving vehicle, more information has come to light.
Since Christmas, detectives have been looking into the murder of Shakira “Kira” Mozie, a 34-year-old mother of a 10-year-old daughter who worked at Sunrise’s Discovery Elementary School.
Mozie, a tutor and cheerleading coach, never returned home to Tamarac after leaving a party in West Park on Christmas Eve, and her family is curious as to why.
The only person who knows what happened, according to Mozie’s father Sheldon Mozie, is her boyfriend Duane Hawkins, who was operating her white Lexus SUV.
According to BSO police, Hawkins was the only other person thought to have been in Mozie’s automobile shortly before her death.
The distraught father claimed that although Lexus and Hawkins returned home without incident, he still wanted explanations.
“Is there no explanation you can think of for her jumping out of a moving car?” questioned Christian De La Rosa of Local 10.
That’s not conceivable, Mozie answered. “Why would she do that? Why would she leap from her vehicle?
According to deputies, Hawkins was gone from the area when emergency personnel showed up.
They claim that after being detained on Monday for operating a vehicle with a suspended license, he was questioned by detectives regarding the collision this week.
As of right now, investigators claim they have no reason to believe Hawkins should be taken into custody in relation to Mozie’s passing.
Hawkins was taken into custody in Palm Beach County on Wednesday for offenses unconnected to Mozie’s demise.
When Layron Livingston of Local 10 News went to Hawkins’ house, no one answered the door. However, a woman who wanted to “clear Duane’s name” contacted him and refused to talk in front of the cameras.
