DALLAS – After Dallas police reported an attempted kidnapping in far north Dallas last Monday, Melissa Ashby began receiving texts.

She stated that the guy described as the suspect was her teenage son.

“He was terrified on Monday night when he came to talk to me about it,” she told me. “He was very scared.”

Ashby stated that her son and a buddy were waiting for another friend who lives on Old Pond Dr. when they noticed a group of young males walking past.

“He, as friendly as he is, said ‘Oh, you look like you would be good at playing football’ and the one boy, who is the last one seen running in the blue shorts, he told him, ‘I don’t talk to strangers, f*** off,'” according to her.

Ashby explained that her son believed it would be a good idea to address them.

“My son does have a form of autism, he’s pretty high functioning, but one of the things that he struggles with is social boundaries,” Ashby informed me. “He saw the mom filming and got panicked and just went back to the car.”

The event became viral after the guys recounted their experience.

“I think their narrative on many of the different interviews that they did change,” she informed me.

Ashby claimed she discovered investigators visited her son’s school but was informed by the administrator that they had just spoken with his classmate. She stated that she then willingly contacted investigators last Tuesday night in the hopes of clearing things up.

“I said, ‘Are you guys going to update this because my son is being plastered across the nation as a criminal and it’s not true,'” she disclosed.

On Thursday, police provided an update. They claimed that the probe is underway. The identified people were minors who had cooperated. Detectives in this investigation do not feel there is a threat to the public.

“It has not been clear cut to the public,” Ashby added.

She stated that her kid had been exonerated of any wrongdoing. She just wishes the knowledge had come out sooner.

“People everywhere are completely scared,” she told me. “They believe the cartel is coming. It has gone out of control, and it is quite worrying to me.”
