ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – A man and a woman have been charged after a three-week-old kid died on Tuesday at a home in the east.
According to the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were summoned to Bluefish Ct in Grandy for an unresponsive three-week-old kid named Declan Merritt. Merritt was transferred to Sentara Albemarle Medical Center in Elizabeth City, where he eventually died.

Brittany Nixon, 35, and Cameron Merritt, 28, were arrested and charged with Declan Merritt’s death on Thursday, August 29th, following an ongoing investigation by the CID/NARC divisions.
Nixon was charged with both involuntary manslaughter and felony child abuse. She is detained at the Currituck County Detention Center on a $500,000 secured bond.
Merritt was charged with criminal child abuse. He is being jailed at the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office on a $250,000 secured bond.
