CLEVELAND, Ohio – The driver of the SUV that struck and killed a 7-year-old kid in Cleveland’s North Collinwood neighborhood on Friday is still being sought by authorities.
Amir Prewitt of Cleveland was hit at 7:20 p.m. while riding a skateboard in a parking lot at 16024 Lakeshore Blvd., according to police and the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s office.
On Saturday, police reported finding the car, a Mercedes Benz SUV. According to authorities, the driver of the Mercedes pulled Amir below the SUV and did not stop.
Amir was taken to Euclid Hospital in a private vehicle, where he died.

On Monday, neighbors held a tribute in front of the apartment building on Lakeshore Boulevard where the tragedy occurred. To commemorate Amir’s life, several people gathered with teddy bears and balloons.
Michael Polensek, head of Cleveland City Council’s Public Safety Committee, attended the vigil. On Tuesday, he told reporters from Cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer that he believes someone in the complex knows who ran Amir over.
“This code-of-silence thing angers the hell out of me,” Polensek stated. “Someone saw a 7-year-old get run over by a vehicle, and no one wants to say anything.”
Polensek stated that he is extremely familiar with the location where Amir was slain. He is concerned since there are so many youngsters living there.
Cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer contacted Rayshawnda Maclin, Amir’s mother. She told WKYC-3News that she appreciated locals attending the vigil to mourn her son, but she is desperate to find out who killed him.

“The killer could be amongst (us) right now, and I wouldn’t know because nobody wants to speak up,” Maclin was said to have said.
Polensek stated that Amir has a future. He stated that if community people truly care about the youngsters in their areas, they should contact the police.
“Let’s identify who did this to this child (Amir) and bring them to justice so they could be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Polensek said to reporters.
