Roper Jailed for Stealing Beer

Roy Lee Roper, 52 of Rome, was arrested at the Circle K on Shorter Avenue after he allegedly stole two 12 packs of beer, valued at $15.

Reports said that when law enforcement located him he attempted to flee on foot.

He was later found hiding under brush on another’s property.

Roper is charged with theft by shoplifting, loitering and obstruction.

Men Jailed for Hitting Women

Terry Dwight Jackson, 40 of Cave Spring was jailed this week after report said he hit a woman in the back of the head.

Reports said that the woman suffered a knot and swelling from the attack. She had to be transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The incident occurred on Fosters Mill Road.

Ulric Demond Allen Jr, 25 of Rome was arrested this week after police said he hit a woman in the face with his closed fist.

Reports said that the victim suffered visible injury to her left eye, both lips and the side of her face.

The incident occurred at a home on Coosawattee AVenue.

Allen is charged with battery.

Home Invasion In Chattooga County, Reynolds Charged

On Monday, the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office released a report on a home invasion and stabbing incident that happened over the past weekend.

In the early morning hours of Saturday, deputies were dispatched to a Ballfield Road, Lyerly address regarding a civil issue that resulted in an assault.  According to the report, when deputies arrived they spoke with Geneva Tidmore, who told the deputies that Cayla Burkhalter came inside the residence to speak with a male subject about a dog that they co-owned.  At that time, two male subjects ran into the residence, uninvited and began to physically assault the male subject.

During the altercation, Ms. Tidmore’s elderly grandmother grabbed a broom and started hitting the two men that had come into the house uninvited. One of the men that was being hit with the broom stabbed the grandmother in the hand.

The argument over the dog apparently began when the male subject demanded that Burkhalter pay $150 for her part-ownership of the dog in question.

One of the intruders, identified as twenty-two-year-old Jacob Eric Reynolds, was charged with home invasion and aggravated assault.  The other suspect that invaded the home is expected to face similar charges.  The other suspect and the grandmother were both taken to the hospital due to lacerations they received during the altercation.

The incident is still be investigated, according to the report that was released on Monday.

Chattooga Tax Office Closed for the Weeks of April 6 – 17

Chattooga County Tax Commissioner Joy Hampton says that her office will be closing this week and remain closed until April 17th. 

Tax Commissioner Hampton said, “The tax and tag office will be closed April 6th-17th.  Staff will be working through email, which can be sent to chattooga41@gmail.com.  For vehicle registrations expiring after March 16, 2020, renewals have been extended to May 15th with no penalties.  New purchases from individuals have been extended to May 15th also.  Mobile home bills and fi fas have been extended to May 1st.

The tax commissioner added, “We can’t wait to get back to business as normal and give you all the service you’re used to!  Most things can be done online at chattoogatax.com, and we will still be processing mail and drop box items daily.”

 

Teen Arrested for Breaking Into Vehicles

De’Kovian Chambers-Owens, 17 of Rome, was arrested this week after he allegedly illegally entered two vehicles in the 300 block of East Seventh Street and stole items.

Reports said that Owens allegedly stole cell phone values, valued at $50.

Owens is charged with two counts theft by taking and two counts entering an automobile with intent to commit a felony.

Man Attacks and Chokes Woman

Warren Dennon Shannon, 34 of Cedartown, was arrested this week at a home on Tamassee Lane after reports said he refused to allow a woman to leave her home and then proceeded to grab and choke her during the altercation.

Reports added that after police arrived Shannon refused to comply with their commands and attempted to flee from the scene on foot.

Shannon is charged with aggravated assault, false imprisonment, reckless conduct, cruelty to children and obstruction of police.

Man Wearing Mask Leads Rome Police on High Speed Chase

Duane Eugene Horton, 66 of Rome, was arrested this week after reports said a police chase in which he crashed into the officer’s vehicle.

Reports said that Horton allegedly failed to yield for a police car before entering Courtesy Ford on US 411.  Horton then led police on a chase down Chateau Drive at speeds of nearly 80 mph.

The chase came to an end when Horton hit the police car near Sunset Drive.

When officers removed Horton from the car he was found wearing a mask and in possession of synthetic marijuana.

Horton is charged with possession of a controlled substance, wearing a mask to hide identity, disorderly conduct, operation of a vehicle on approach of an emergency vehicle, failure to maintain lane, failure to obey traffic light, stop sign violation, reckless driving, DUI and attempting to elude police.
