Newly released documents reveal that Commander, President Biden’s cherished German shepherd, was involved in at least 24 incidents where Secret Service agents were bitten.
Following these incidents, Commander has been relocated from the White House residence and is reportedly staying with friends of the Bidens in Delaware.
A recent report by CNN discloses that the Secret Service had to adjust their procedures when Commander was present.
According to a source with close ties to the Biden family, the president and first lady are deeply saddened and remorseful regarding the incidents.
They have expressed their apologies to those affected and have even delivered flowers to some individuals.
The source further explained that despite concerted efforts to address the issue, Commander’s overprotective behavior persisted, leading the Bidens to make the difficult decision to have him reside with other relatives.
Commander’s Altercations: Nantucket, Camp David
Commander was involved in altercations during the Biden family’s Thanksgiving vacation in Nantucket and while on a trip to Camp David.
Both members of the Secret Service’s uniformed detail and the president’s protective detail were engaged in these incidents.
According to records initially disclosed by John Greenewald, at least 10 Secret Service members required medical attention as a result of injuries sustained to their arms, hands, legs, and waists.
In October 2022, a Secret Service technician expressed concern about the escalating behavior of the family pet, indicating apprehension that further incidents could occur.
Additionally, an assistant special agent in charge of the USSS’ Presidential Protective Division informed team members that recent dog bites necessitated adjustments to operational tactics when Commander is present, advising ample space be given to the animal.
White House Dog Commander Removed for Biting
In October, Commander was removed from the White House following a series of biting incidents.
Having arrived as a puppy in 2021, Commander struggled to acclimate to the bustling environment within 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. That same year, the Bidens experienced the loss of two other German shepherds.
Three-year-old Major was also relocated after being involved in two biting incidents within a month, while Champ, who had been by Biden’s side since his vice presidency, passed away at the age of 13.
The White House has defended the pets, attributing their behavior to the stressful surroundings.
